For the next four weeks, the world seems to set aside its differences and gather around something far greater than politics, ideology, or national and global discords. The FIFA World Cup once again reminds humanity that despite our different languages, cultures, and traditions, people everywhere share many of the same hopes and desires.

From major cities to small towns across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, millions of people are celebrating together under the banner of football. Streets are filled with dancing, laughter, music, and food as fans continue to brag about their favorite dishes and must-see destinations on social media. The flags and the colors of nations are proudly displayed both on and off the field, expressing culture, heritage, and identity.

Families and friends are gathering at watch parties across North America in restaurants, parks, plazas, sports venues, and public town squares to cheer for their teams while embracing the excitement that only the world’s most beloved sport continues to provide.

In its first week, visitors and fans from all over the world are experiencing the beauty of cultures beyond their own, especially American culture. Hearing international visitors express their excitement over simple conveniences such as crushed ice, free refills, and air conditioning has caused me to reflect and appreciate many things that Americans often take for granted.

Their love for American staples such as rodeos, breathtaking landscapes, ranch dressing, barbecue, Costco, Waffle House, and Buc-ee’s serves as a reminder that even the smallest blessings are worth appreciating.

Watching Koreans celebrating with Mexicans, Scotland’s Tartan Army sounding their bagpipes in Boston, Norwegians rowing in the stadiums, Germans playing saxophones late into the night, Brazilians and Cape Verdeans dancing in Miami, Dutch aficionados  singing “La Chona” and shouting, “Hermano, ya eres Mexicano!” and Japanese fans enjoying Texas barbecue demonstrates how football can bring cultures together in remarkable ways.

Perhaps one of the most touching moments came from the Iranian players, whose farewell message read:

“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast. We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality. And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran throughout these 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations.”

Messages like these remind us that beyond competition lies something far more meaningful and that is our love for humanity.

Throughout the tournament, fans are tasting foods from distant nations, learning traditional dances, hearing unfamiliar languages, and discovering the customs and stories that make each country unique. What once seemed foreign becomes familiar, and strangers become friends united by a shared passion.

The World Cup is revealing that humanity genuinely desires human connection. At its heart, the World Cup is reminding us all, what we already know deep within ourselves. Most people desire peace, unity, laughter, passion, respect and love for one another. Beyond political debates and news headlines, ordinary people simply want opportunities to laugh, celebrate life, support their communities, and create lasting memories and friendships with those around them. For the next few weeks the world will continue to experience a glimpse of what can happen when people focus more on what unites them than on what separates them and I believe this feeling will endure for a long time to come.

Here in Atlanta, home of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, we are thrilled and honored to welcome the world and share our mutual passion for football, hospitality, unity, and friendship. With tears in my eyes,  to me, this is the greatest victory of all not only for our nation, but for the entire world.
