Freedom of Thought

May 26, 2023

One of the most concerning issues today is the modern attempt to divide Americans based on race and gender. This is why in November of 2022, Our America wrote a letter to East Carolina University decrying their efforts to adopt Critical Race Theory as a guiding principle to their academic calendar.

Unfortunately, East Carolina refused to respond to the letter.

But then, when their sister school, the University of Northern Carolina – Chapel Hill decided to award scholarships to individuals based on their race, we again wrote a letter to the university asking them to adopt the principles that made America great. Mainly, the idea that every person is created equal and should be judged on the basis of their character, not their skin color.

This time, we applied pressure on the school and received media publicity which ultimately ran in 73 local outlets and 26 affiliated TV stations.

This time, the school was forced to respond and stated: “The University carefully monitors its ongoing compliance with federal guidelines”.

It may not sound like much, but it signaled a change in course. The university knew it couldn’t continue to implement divisive programs and scholarships. This is why, the next month, UNC’s Board of Governors voted against making DEI statements mandatory for students and faculty.

And once again, in May, UNC-Chapel Hill rejected recommendations by the School of Medicine’s Task Force to condition tenure and promotion for faculty by requiring them to commit to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In response to these events, Our America sent another letter praising Chapel Hill’s new direction and we hope other schools follow.

As the saying goes, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Our America will continue to remain vigilant in monitoring institutions that violate the principles of equal opportunity and free speech, to ensure that everyone has a fair shot at success.

We will continue to advocate for fairness, inclusivity, and the protection of individual liberties. Our mission is to ensure that no American is marginalized or judged solely based on their race, ethnicity, or gender.
